CocoRootz Nature School

Why CocoRootz Nature School was Established?

CocoRootz Nature School was founded to address a growing need for educational spaces that nurture the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually—through meaningful connection with nature. Our mission is rooted in the belief that children heal, grow, and thrive when they are connected to the natural world,

CocoRootz Nature School was founded to address a growing need for educational spaces that nurture the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually—through meaningful connection with nature. Our mission is rooted in the belief that children heal, grow, and thrive when they are connected to the natural world, supported by caring mentors, and given opportunities to discover their identity, purpose, and potential.

Serving boys ages 5–18 who are residents of the Sarasota Housing Authority, CocoRootz Nature School provides culturally responsive, nature-based educational programming designed to expand access to high-quality learning opportunities for youth who are often underserved by traditional educational systems. Many of the boys we serve face barriers related to poverty, limited access to enrichment opportunities, community violence, educational inequities, and social-emotional challenges that impact their academic success and overall well-being.

At CocoRootz Nature School, we recognize that academic achievement cannot be separated from emotional wellness and cultural identity. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is intentionally woven into every aspect of our programming. Through outdoor exploration, mentorship, group learning experiences, mindfulness practices, creative expression, and hands-on environmental education, students develop essential life skills such as emotional regulation, self-awareness, confidence, empathy, leadership, conflict resolution, and resilience.

Equally important is our commitment to cultural competency and representation within education. Many boys in marginalized communities lack access to educational environments that affirm their lived experiences, cultural heritage, and strengths. CocoRootz creates a safe and empowering space where boys are seen, valued, and encouraged to embrace who they are. By integrating culturally responsive teaching practices, community storytelling, environmental stewardship, and positive male mentorship, we help students build a stronger sense of identity, belonging, and hope for their future.

Our work is grounded in measurable impact. CocoRootz Nature School utilizes the Hope Scale as an evidence-based tool to assess student growth in areas such as goal-setting, motivation, agency, and pathways thinking. By tracking increases in hope and emotional well-being, we are able to evaluate how our programs positively influence student outlook, engagement, and long-term success.
